What is Ash Wednesday? What does Ash Wednesday mean?
Ash Wednesday is a holiday centered on prayer and fasting for many Christian denominations.
The name Ash Wednesday comes from placing ashes of repentance on the forehead with the prayers "Repent and believe in the good news" or "Remember that you are dust, and you will return to dust." It is called the Feast of Ashes because the Church has a habit of using blessed ashes to mark the foreheads of the faithful. Ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves on Palm Sunday of the previous year.
For believers, Ash Wednesday is quite important, this is an opportunity to express their spirit of repentance and humility and an opportunity for them to re-evaluate their own dusty condition.
When is the Ash Festival?
Usually, Ash Wednesday is not fixed from year to year because it depends on the date of Easter. Ash Wednesday always begins 46 days before Easter.
